Shipments from the U.S. to Canada need the following documents:
    • Bill of Lading - required at pickup (Included in E•Z Export)
    • Canada Customs Invoice - required at pickup if the shipment si valued at $1,600 (CDN) or more. If the shipper has special document requirements or arrangements with the importer/broker and does not require an invoice, it must be noted on the bill of lading. If the shipper uses E•Z Export, the CCI is included. (Certain commodities may require a CCI and a commercial invoice.

4. Is a customs broker required?

From the U.S. to Canada, the Canadian importer or purchaser may use a Canadian Customs Broker. If possible, the shipper should identify the broker or party acting as a broker on the bill of lading.

From Canada, a U.S. consignee needs a U.S. broker/freight forwarder, depending on where the freight will clear customs.

Reimer Express is not a broker or a freight forwarder, so these types of services cannot be provided by Reimer or our parent company. Our border Co-ordinators can also recommend one, if you require the services of either party.

5. Can the shipper simply select a forwarding agent and customs brokers from a list and provide their names and addresses on the bill of lading?

It is important that the responsible party contact the forwarding agent and/or customs broker(s) to set up an account with them. Like any business relationship, they will need to agree on the services to be provided, the charges for these services, set up payment or credit terms, etc.

When a customer fails to complete this important step of international shipping, delays will be unavoidable at both the U.S. and Canadian borders. When this relationship has been established, all parties involved must be informed as to which forwarding agent and customs broker is/are designated to process each shipment through the border. This should be done prior to shipment pickup.

6. How much will duties and taxes be?

The importer of record is normally billed by his/her broker for duties and taxes. The customs broker determines duty (if applicable) along with the appropriate taxes and reports those taxes to customs on behalf of the client.

7. Is my shipment covered against loss or damage when it is being delivered in the U.S.?

For moves into the U.S. from Canada, Reimer provides you with coverage at $2.00 per pound, unless additional insurance coverage is requested.

8. How are my freight charges calculated?

It depends on your pricing program. Information can be obtained by contacting your local sales representative.

Reimer Express has Border Co-ordinators available to answer all your questions and facilitate cross-border moves. Our Canadian and U.S. customers can call 1-800-INTLREX (1-800-468-5739).
